Getting Support for Your Child

When You Have Concerns About Your Child

At T. Clay Wood Elementary School, we believe that strong partnerships between families and schools are essential to student success. If you have concerns about your child's academic progress, behavior, social skills, emotional well-being, or overall school experience, we encourage you to reach out early so we can work together to provide the appropriate support.

How to Get Help

Start by contacting your child's teacher, school counselor, or an administrator. Sharing your concerns and observations helps us better understand your child's needs both at school and at home.

If concerns continue over time, parents may contact their child's PWCS Zoned School Administrator to request a meeting with the Student Support Team (SST) or Intervention Team (IT). The SST is a multidisciplinary problem-solving team that reviews academic, behavioral, social, and emotional concerns and develops targeted interventions and supports to help students succeed.

Support Options Available Through PWCS

Student Support Team (SST) / Intervention Team
The SST reviews available information, identifies student strengths and areas of need, and develops a plan of support that may include academic, behavioral, or social-emotional interventions. Families are important partners throughout this process.

Comprehensive Child Study (CCS)
For students experiencing more significant social, emotional, behavioral, or outside-of-school challenges that affect their ability to learn and participate successfully in school, a Comprehensive Child Study may be recommended. CCS specialists work collaboratively with families, school staff, and community agencies to identify and coordinate appropriate supports and resources.

If You Suspect Your Child May Have a Disability

Parents have the right to request an evaluation if they suspect their child may have a disability that is impacting their educational progress. If you have concerns about your child's learning, communication, behavior, social-emotional development, attention, or other areas of functioning, we encourage you to share those concerns with your child's teacher and a school administrator as soon as possible.

A parent may submit a request to the school administrator for the school's Child Find Team to review the concern. The Child Find Team will consider available information, discuss the concerns, and determine whether an evaluation is warranted. It is important to note that the Student Support Team (SST) process does not delay or prevent a referral for a special education evaluation when a disability is suspected. Families are active partners throughout the review and evaluation process.
