Mrs. Cohen's Family

Hi!  My name is Deanna Cohen and I love being a part of the T. Clay Wood team and I am thrilled to be your teacher!  While this year will present new challenges, it’s still going to be a fun year filled with lots of learning and new adventures. I can’t wait to see what the school year has in store for us.  I want to know ALL about you, but first I’m going to tell you a few things about me.

I was born in Michigan and spent most of my childhood in Chelsea, Michigan.  (Home of Jiffy Mixes!)  I have one younger sister, Beth, who lives and teaches in Michigan.  When I graduated high school, I moved to Kalamazoo, Michigan and attended Western Michigan University…Go Broncos!  I majored in Elementary Education and graduated in December of 2004.  Because teaching jobs were scarce in Michigan, I packed up my car and moved down to Virginia!

I taught 1st grade at Minnieville Elementary in Woodbridge for 4 years.  I then decided to move up with my students to 2nd grade and have taught that for 11 years with one year in between moving to 3rd grade.  This will be my 16th year teaching…I can’t believe how quickly time goes by! 2nd grade is my favorite because I love the curriculum and love watching the students grow and become independent learners.

I have been married for ten years to a wonderful man, Matt.  We have a son, JJ, who will turn three in October.  He keeps us on our toes and laughing everyday.  We also have two dogs, Colby and Brutus. In 2013, I graduated from George Mason University with my Masters in Curriculum and Instruction for Education along with a Reading Specialist certification.

I am so excited for this upcoming year!  I am thrilled to have you as part of Cohen’s Crew!  It’s going to be a fantastic year!
