Devices and Insurance

Prince William County Public Schools is now a One-to-One (1:1) school division!

What is a 1:1 school division?

It means that we have one device for every single child to use in the county. Since students aren't sharing devices, each student is assigned a specific device that they will use for the entire year. Each student will receive the device either at their Meet The Teacher or on the First Day of School.

How will the device be used?

It will vary from class to class, as each teacher may choose to use it in the best way to support their instruction. Children will be using their devices regularly, though! At T. Clay Wood we know students will use it to access Lexia, Mastery Connect, Canvas, as well as dozens of other sites, apps, and resources that we have access to.

Do I need to sign for the device?

As part of their "Online Registration", you'll complete the Digital Device Agreement.

What happens if my child breaks/damages/loses their device?

K-2 students have iPads. Coverage for the iPads was purchased by PWCS through AppleCare. The only incident that families would be responsible for would be loss or theft of the iPad.

3-5 students have laptops. There is no coverage for the laptops and families are responsible for any physical damage, loss, or theft.

Device charges are prorated and range from $64-$495. Prince William County has partnered with Securranty to provide full-coverage insurance for the PWCS-issued devices for the cost of $29.95 per student. This one-time cost provides coverage for the device for the entire school year (valid for 1 year from the date of purchase). The Securranty insurance will cover accidental damage, loss, theft, and any other peril to the device. Please visit Securranty for more information or to purchase coverage.

Do I need the Serial Number/Model Number for the insurance?

No. If the device is damaged and we need to file a claim, the Technical Specialist at T. Clay Wood will file the claim on your behalf. They will take care of entering the model/serial information with the claim. You will receive an automated email from Securranty after you purchase the insurance saying you need to update your policy with the model/serial number information. You may ignore this automated email, as our Technical Specialist will update your policy.

Purchasing Device Insurance later in the school year

The best time to purchase device insurance is at the beginning of the school year, within the first 30 days of the device being issued. If you wish to purchase device insurance later in the year, you can purchase from Securranty, but the policy will not become active until our Technical Specialist has a chance to inspect your child's device at school and verify that it has no preexisting damage. If our Technical Specialist determines that your device already contains some sort of damage, it may not be eligible for insurance coverage.

What if I purchase insurance, but after visual inspection my device isn't eligible for coverage?

It depends on the reason your device isn't eligible. If we determine that your device isn't eligible because your child damaged it, you will need to pay for the damage. After the device is repaired, you can then activate the insurance policy against future damage to the device. If your device isn't eligible because it has another issue (not caused by your child), we may be able to swap the device out for a different device and activate the policy for the new device. If we are unable to activate your policy, we will work with Securranty to issue you a refund for your purchase since you're unable to activate it.
